FIELD TRIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT

With thanks to the great generosity and support of our hosts, we have yet again had a

very successful season running eight trials.

We are extremely grateful to the following shoots who very generously invited us to their

grounds this last season: Mr Richard Marker and head keeper Simon Fuller, The Earl of

Devon and head keeper Dick Durrant, Sir David Hoare and head keeper Tony Foster,

Nigel Partiss and head keeper Paul Bowyer, Jeremy Boyd and head keeper Daniel

Hartford and The Lord Vestey and head keeper Eddy Graves.

Special thanks go to Tony Foster from Luscombe, who kindly donated a stunning new

guns’ choice trophy in memory of Pete Dennett, a regular gun at Luscombe spaniel trials.

On the day the trophy was presented by Pete’s son Jake, under keeper from Powderham.

This was Eddy Graves last season at Stowell Park, as he is now taking his well-deserved

retirement. Eddy’s involvement with the Club started in 1986 at Powderham Castle where

he was Headkeeper, holding an Open (non-qualifying) Stake for AV Spaniel.

When Eddy moved to Stowell Park, he invited the club on behalf of The Lord Vestey to

hold a trial there, a great honour from The Lord Vestey. That first trial was in January

1995. Eddy has been so incredibly supportive of our sport over the years, nothing being

too much trouble, everything extremely well organised and professional and this showed

when Stowell hosted the most wonderful Springer Championship over three days in

January 2016, one that most certainly will not be forgotten.

What a great ambassador Eddy has been for shooting, in 2008 he was awarded an MBE,

for services to game keeping. He was put forward for the award by the Food Standards

Agency after he helped them develop a training course to enable people to comply with

new controls on the way game and venison are sold for human consumption.

We wish Eddy a very happy, healthy retirement and thank him for all his contributions over

the years.

Our sincere thanks go to all our hosts for their most generous and kind hospitality. It is

always a great privilege to be invited to these grounds and we are truly indebted for this

honour.

Our thanks also to all the hardworking keepers and their team of helpers in ensuring the

day’s success. A trial day involves extra work and planning, without this support we would

not be able to participate in our sport, and it is very much appreciated

Thank you to all the judges who have given their time to do a brilliant job for us, helping to

make the smooth running of the day so much easier and ensuring everyone is at ease

making for really enjoyable days.

A big thank you to the Committee and Club members who have helped out, freely giving

their time to help the smooth running of the trials. I have had a great team of helpers and

all your help has been greatly appreciated.

Our grateful thanks to Skinners Dog Food for donating dog food to the prize winners.

Thank you again to all our wonderful hosts and keepers for giving us such a great season.

Sally Jenkins
